Mount Miguel Wrestling Wins First League Title in 54 Years!

John Duran February 13, 2017

The Mount Miguel Matadors can finally call themselves League Champions for the first time since 1963.
The young Matadors crowned themselves league champs on senior night in dominant fashion as they defeated the Santana Sultans 60-18.
Head Coach Victor Richmond, who took over the program in 2010, had close calls over the years but his teams would always come up just short.
"It was a long time coming," Richmond stated when asked about finally getting over the hump.
The seniors lead the way on their night, recording pins in record time, Juan Ruiz, 154 pounds, pinned his opponent in just eight seconds. Sebastian Iribe, 195 pounds, scored a pin in nine seconds.
The Matadors earned nine victories, all by pin, plus one forfeit. As impressive as the win was, they must now focus their attention to the postseason.
Mount Miguel will be looking to end another drought: win CIF for the first time since 1986.
The Matadors will be competing at Mater Dei High School on Saturday, February 18 in the CIF Division IV tournament.
