Matadors Start Fast, Win Big in CIF Opener

John Duran May 17, 2017

The Matadors defeated the Cougars 16-6 in front of a lively crowd to advance in the Division V CIF playoffs.
"It was an exciting game," Head Coach Kevin Darby said of his team's victory. "It was an awesome crowd. ASB made this the game of the week and we had great support from the staff and the students. All year we've had great support from the staff and students."
The Matadors constantly put the ball in play, jumping out to 5-0 lead in the first inning and scoring in every inning to give the Cougars no chance.
"Stephanie Szumilas hit a triple off the fence. She hit really well and had four or five RBIs," Coach Darby said. "And our player of the game was Stephanie Herrera who went 3-3 with two walks and a game-winning triple. And played a dynamite shortstop."
Mount Miguel will travel to Chula Vista today to take on Bayfront Charter High at Mount San Miguel Park. Stephanie Herrera will take the mound for the Matadors.
"I expect the same thing I saw today with maybe a little polishing on the defense," Coach Darby said of today's upcoming game. "Take care of the routine plays, put the ball in play, pitchers throw strikes and I think everything else will take care of itself."
First pitch is at 3:30 p.m.
